At its latest developer conference, Apple officially rolled out Apple Intelligence — a powerful on-device AI system that marks a major shift in how users experience intelligence on their devices. Unlike many cloud-based models, Apple’s system is designed to run locally on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, starting with iPhone 16 and macOS Sequoia.
The most notable part? Privacy-first AI. Apple Intelligence processes user data directly on-device, keeping personal information safe from external servers. It delivers capabilities like text summarisation, context-aware suggestions, and automatic content generation — all without compromising privacy. For more demanding tasks, Apple integrates Private Cloud Compute, ensuring that even when the cloud is used, data is never stored or shared.
A key highlight of the announcement was the built-in ChatGPT integration. Apple is allowing users to access OpenAI’s models directly within Siri and system-wide writing tools — no separate downloads required. The system intelligently decides when to hand off a query to ChatGPT, ensuring a seamless and intelligent user experience.
Apple Intelligence also enhances the existing ecosystem with personalised smart features. You can now write and rewrite emails with tone suggestions, summarise lengthy messages, get reminders based on context, or generate media captions — all natively within iOS and macOS apps.
Developers, too, get new capabilities. APIs for Apple Intelligence will allow apps to adopt summarisation, smart replies, and contextual predictions with minimal effort. This opens up massive potential across productivity, design, and even healthcare apps.
From a user standpoint, the rollout is gradual. Apple Intelligence will debut on supported devices later this year in beta, with wider rollout expected in stages.
